On the Master in Sports Journalism you will develop your skills to report rigorously and objectively on sports issues in audiovisual media (radio, television), digital media or written press.

Throughout the program you will discover and train in the day-to-day life of a current sports journalist: from writing press releases for agencies, to announcing sports events, managing social networks (community management) or photojournalism, among others. Due to the quality of its contents and their practical application, in previous courses the students of the Master in Sports Journalism have had the possibility of doing internships in the media and organizations such as RAC1, TV3, El País, Cadena Ser, Catalunya Ràdio, La Vanguardia, El Periódico,  Barça TV, Movistar TV, FC Barcelona, ​​Dorna, Panenka Magazine and different media in the media group MEDIAPRO such as Movistar, GOL, and LaLigaTV International.

The Master in Sports Journalism also stands out in training in sports commentary. Sports broadcasting is a basic part of sports journalism. Therefore, we will prepare you not only to have knowledge of sport and competition and its writing, but also to know how to use your voice with the appropriate rhythm and tone, to have a rich, original and specialized language to communicate the sporting and emotional aspects that you are broadcasting.

Who is it for?

The Master in Sports Journalism is aimed at graduates in Journalism and other higher degrees in the field of communication sciences, who want to gain a specialization in the field of sports journalism. Graduates in any field of knowledge other than journalism and communication can also apply for the master. In this case, a few additional hours of Journalism Training Complements will be needed during the first term.

Curriculum

The Master in Sports Journalism is structured into 10 subjects, together with the completion of a Master's Final Project and some curricular practice.

First term

History of major sports information events

The objective of this module is to provide the student with a solid base on the history of sport, on its evolution, on its adaptation to the times. A base that complements the information that you foreseeably already have, acquired thanks to your own learning as a result of your vocation. In addition, the review of that history will connect with the knowledge of the different events both at the world level (Olympics, World Cups, Europeans Championships, etc.) and at the state level (leagues, organizing committees, etc.), events that for many young journalists are the dream of their professional life.

Sports culture I

This module offers students elements of knowledge and experimentation aimed at obtaining journalistic skills in areas related to sport and which are necessary for the development of rigorous specialized journalism. The subject covers two terms. In the first term, the areas studied are: History of Contemporary Sports Journalism (documentary sources and statistics, treatment of historical data for its dissemination); Sports Law (regulation of broadcasts, hiring of athletes, doping), and Ethics and Deontology in sports journalism (general ethical principles, specialized deontology).

Institutional communication

The general objective of this module is for students to become aware of the importance of communication to build a good reputation and brand image, whether of a club or of athletes.

Photojournalism in Sports

This module aims to offer students a theoretical and practical tour of the main currents of journalism in general and sports specificity. The different models of sporting press will be analysed. The subject, which takes up a quarter, will deal in particular with concepts on page architecture, navigation, typography and the various information formats. Photojournalism, infography and illustration applied to sport will be deepened.

Second term

Sports culture II

This module works independently, but it is the continuation of the subject Sports Culture I, which was taught in the first term. In this second term, the areas studied are: Sports Medicine (safety in sports practice, traumatology), Sports Economics (management of sports companies, club finance, audiovisual rights) and Structure of Communication Applied to Sports.

Sports broadcasting workshop

This module aims to offer a theoretical and practical journey through the main techniques and current models of sports broadcasting, on radio and television. The course will deal in detail with the different professional figures involved in a broadcast. At the end of the module, students will have the necessary skills to present part or all of a broadcast of a sporting event.

Journalistic writing in sports

The aim of the module is to improve and perfect journalistic writing skills in the sports area. This module is focused on writing reports, profiles, articles, editorials, and critiques among others. The module is conceived as a specialization and professional development workshop in the field of writing. Another essential aim is to offer students a critical vision of professional practice in this discipline, with an exhaustive review of the main authors, as well as to provide the necessary tools for writing in the audiovisual field.

New Trends in Sports Journalism

This subject offers knowledge and experience aimed to gain competencies in different areas of journalism growing and expanding due to the new opportunities that Internet and the digital applications bring. This module is organised in different thematic areas that address some of the new trends in sports journalism.

Third term

Workshop on new audiovisual formats

This module will offer students a theoretical, practical, and critical overview of sports journalism that is currently carried out on television. The subject will be taught during the third term and will be essentially practical, with the aim that students make informative audiovisual pieces and a sports program, simulating real working conditions in a media. The course will consist of 20% theory and 80% practice. Students will work basically in the academic campus, but also outside it, going out to carry out practice and informative coverage. The continuous practice will determine the grade for the module.

Internet and Social Networks Workshop

This workshop aims to offer the student all the tools for their duties on the internet and social networks, understood as sources of information, but also and above all as means of communication of a different nature from traditional ones.

English for sports journalists

This module is aimed at students who are interested in working on the broadcasting of sporting events in the media anywhere in the world. The workshop will be taught entirely in English. In class, the skills necessary to be able to work in the sports journalism sector will be worked on, with special importance for communication, the specific vocabulary, and the deontological and ethical codes of the journalist.

Master's Final Project

Master's Final Project

With the Master's Final Project the students integrate the various subjects of the program by applying the knowledge acquired throughout the course.

Complementary activities

The Master in Sports Journalism also includes the possibility of participating in practical activities and activities for personal and professional growth such as:

  • UPF-BSM Inside: is a group of interdisciplinary subjects (applied data, communication, creativity, innovation and project management, sustainability and leadership among others) that, if you take this program, you can access at no additional cost. They are 100% online and you can take them throughout the academic year at your own pace, as they have been designed as self-study subjects.
  • International mobility: The UPF Barcelona School of Management offers you the possibility of expanding your training and international vision through the International Mobility Programme. Extend your studies extracurricularly, during the academic year following the completion of your Master's, at a top-level institution. Limited places.

Qualification obtained

Once you have passed the program, you will obtain an electronic degree (e-Título) for the Máster de Formación Permanente en Periodismo Deportivo  issued by the Pompeu Fabra University

The e-Título is an authentic digital degree, issued in pdf format and electronically signed, with the same legal validity as if it were in paper format.

Methodology

The Master in Sports Journalism combines solid theoretical training with a very accentuated practice. In class, the active participation of the students will be developed. All this is complemented through professional practice, carried out in the media, and in the best companies in the sector, which constitute a basic pillar in the learning process.

Case analysis

Descriptive, analytical, critical, and evaluation explanations will be made of specific processes in the development of sports events, voice-overs, and broadcasts. Students will be encouraged to participate in critical analysis and contribute their personal insight.

The master is complemented with curricular practices that will take place in a sports organizations or in a communication media, mainly.

Our admission process consists of a rigorous evaluation of each application to preserve the quality of the group as well as the training, experience, and work capacity of all students.

Who can apply?

Graduates in Journalism and other higher degrees in the field of communication sciences, such as audiovisual communication, who want to acquire a specialization in the field of sports journalism.

Graduates in any field of knowledge (other than journalism and communication) who want to acquire the necessary knowledge to carry out journalistic activities in the sports sector with quality guarantees (in this case you need to take some additional hours of "Training Complements in Journalism" during the first term, which has an additional price of €1,200).

Those participants who do not have Spanish as one of their mother tongues or who did not have it as a teaching language in their training studies, must prove that they have at least a B2 level of Spanish (Common European Framework of Reference), as well as fluently take part in a personal interview with the academic director, if necessary.

Applications for admission will be evaluated when you complete the following steps:

  • Complete the online admission form.
  • Pay the €120 admission fee. This amount will be returned if you are not admitted.
  • Send the following documents through the online platform e-registrar:
    • Presentation letter or video
    • CV
    • Scanned copy of university degree (if you are in the last year of your degree, you can provide your academic records)
    • Scanned copy of Transcript of Records. Make sure that it includes your GPA (Grade Point Average)
    • Scanned copy of ID Card or Passport

Additional documents may be requested in certain cases.

  • The Admissions Committee will select the candidates on the basis of a personal or CV-based interview.
  • You will be notified of the admission decision in writing.

Enrolment

  • Registration must be paid within a 15 days after the admission.
  • Once the letter of acceptance to the program has been received, you will need to submit the following original documents before the course begins:
    • Stamped and/or authenticated photocopy of your university degree.
  • If you have a foreign degree you may need to submit additional documents.
  • Paying the reservation fee (25% of the program's tuition fees) is essential in order to reserve your place
  • If you pay the tuition fees by bank transfer you will be required to introduce the program code. The program code for this course is 1240.
  • The remaining tuition fees must be paid 2 weeks before the start of the course.
