Master in Scientific and Technical Translation

The Master in Scientific and Technical Translation (MTCT) responds to the high demand for translators specialised in the fields of science and technology. The Master develops students' ability to translate scientific and technical texts from English (the main source language), and to a lesser degree French, into Spanish, the only target language.

The Master in Scientific and Technical Translation teaches students the skills necessary for translation and allows them to perfect their scientific and technical text writing and to develop suitable work methods, as well as giving them the opportunity to learn about this professional sector.

• Study and analyse scientific and technical language, with special emphasis on terminology, writing style and linguistic problems arising from translation.
• Resolve the general problems involved in scientific and technical translation. Search for, apply and assess information resources.
• Acquire basic knowledge of scientific and technical disciplines that will allow for the comprehension of texts.
• Consolidate the skills needed for written communication of specialised texts.
• Use the tools provided by new technologies that aid the translation process: assisted and automatic translation, search engines and database access, terminology management software and software localisation.
• Learn about the scope of professional translation in national and international centres
  

The Master in Scientific and Technical Translation is divided into two large modules.
Module A comprises 150 face-to-face hours and focuses on:

• the study and analysis of scientific and technical language, with special emphasis on terminology, writing style and linguistic problems arising from translation;
• the general problems involved in scientific and technical translation; searching for, applying and assessing information resources;
• the scope of professional translation in national and international centres, and
• the problem of translation quality.

Module B has a highly practical approach and consists of 250 face-to-face hours. It is divided into five blocks with the same characteristics that cover a series of similar disciplines. For scientific and technical translation, a good understanding of the text is essential. For this reason, each block is divided into two parts:

• basic understanding of the relevant disciplines, and
• effective translation of a number of texts regarding said disciplines.
  The Master in Scientific and Technical Translation also includes a project or internship, supervised by a tutor.
