The Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), in collaboration with the Public Policy Program of the Johns Hopkins University, set up a Master's program in Public and Social Policy (MUPPS) program in Barcelona. Established in 1994, it has become one of the best-known programs of its type in Europe.

The program trains professionals in designing, managing, planning, and evaluating public policy programs and interventions in order to improve populations' quality of life and welfare.

These professionals act through agencies, programs and institutions of the different sectors of the welfare state, as well as with other social institutions, either in the public or in the private sector.

In these times, there is a growing demand for professionals specialized in the public management of social strategic areas in order to improve the quality of live of population. This increase in the demand can be observed at the local, regional, national, and international level.

The MUPPS is part of a European network of research centers on public and social policy. The program has links with several local, regional, national, and international organizations, which provide a practical development.

Programme

The Master's program in Public and Social Policy offers you the necessary training to solve the main social issues of our society.

You will be trained as a polyvalent professional in the different dimensions of welfare state. The contents of the program are interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary and include all areas: social security, job creation and labor, health, education, housing, care for children, the elderly, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups, elimination of discrimination, and promotion of social and human rights, prevention of social exclusion, and integration of immigrants.

Teaching is structured in theoretical and applied contents. Lectures are taught in intensive sessions that last a long weekend, once a month. The program fosters the active participation during the training, stimulating at the same time the adaptation to individual needs.

Advisory Committee
The Master's has an Advisory Committee composed of representatives of different Catalan institutions: the Generalitat of Catalonia (regional government), represented by the Department of Health and Social Security, the Department of Welfare and Family, and the Women's Catalan Institute; the City Council of Barcelona, represented by the Department of Social Affairs, the Department of Education, the Public Health Agency of Barcelona, the Municipal Health Assistance Institute and Barcelona Activa (the Barcelona's development agency); the Network of Catalan Municipalities, and the Diputación of Barcelona (provincial government).

The Committee meets regularly and advises the Directorship of the Master's with the experience of the public policy and interventions fostered by administrations that work at different territorial levels and competence areas.

Potential candidates

The Master's program is addressed to professionals working in the management of public and social policies, as well as to graduates in Political Science, Economics, Health, Labor studies, Law, Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, History, and other social sciences.

The participants in this program find professional opportunities in the public administration and in private institutions, including NGOs, and in international organizations and their social agencies.
