Diplomatic legalisation of foreign university qualifications

Diplomatic legalisation of academic qualification(s) is compulsory for all overseas qualifications of countries that are not EU members or signatories to the Agreement on the European Economic Area. No postgraduate or master's qualifications can be issued without legalised university qualifications. This procedure must be done from the individual's country of origin and requires the stamping of the university degree in accordance with international agreements.

FOREIGN UNIVERSITY DEGREE (non EU)

In the case of foreign university qualifications the following documents must be presented to apply for postgraduate studies:

  1. Application form authorising postgraduate studies.
  2. Diplomatically convalidated University Degree.
  3. Certified Academic Record.

Legalisation will be completed depending on the agreement signed by the country (see website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation or website of the  Ministry of Education):

  • For those countries subscribed to the Hague Convention it is necessary to obtain a stamp from the Hague Apostille.
  • For those countries subscribed to the Andrés Bello Convention or those countries which are not subscribed to any convention, it is necessary to obtain three stamps from: the Ministry of Education for the issuing country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country in question and the Spanish Consulate in the country which has issued the qualification.

FOREIGN UNIVERSITY DEGREE (EU)

In case of foreign university qualifications of members of the European Union or signatory to the Agreement on the European Economic Area does not require any kind of legalization. In order to complete postgraduate studies you need to present the following documents:

  1. A certified university degree

If these University Degrees are in a language other than Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Italian or Portuguese, the legalised degree and academic record must be accompanied by a sworn translation into Catalan or Spanish. The official translation can be done by a sworn translator authorised or registered in Spain, by any Spanish diplomatic or consular representation abroad or finally by any diplomatic or consular representation of the applicant's country of origin in Spain.
