CATALONIA AND BARCELONA: GATEWAYS TO COMMUNICATION WITH EUROPE

Geographically, Catalonia is a small country but it has a long and often little-known history. From the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean coast the variety of its landscapes has long been celebrated, and it offers infinite possibilities to travellers. Its cities conceal many surprises; its towns, hidden corners and traditions evoke times which have long passed but are still alive.

Catalonia's geographical position as a gateway for communication with the centre of Europe, has defined its clearly pro-European vocation, which is reflected in its decidedly positive attitude to the European Union.

Ours is a country with a population of six million, with more than a thousand years of history and a language and culture which help to form its unique personality. In their time 1992's Olympic Games symbolised an outstanding moment in a period of intense development. The celebration of the Fòrum Universal de les Cultures in 2004 represented another historic milestone for the city.
